Fifty Dangerous Things 22

Playing in a hailstorm.

We’ve been waiting a year to do this one, so forgive the video that barely shows the hail and is pretty dark.  We were sitting around the table eating dinner when we started to hear the pattering of hail.  Sidney and I looked at each other at the exact same moment and yelled “hail!” before I ran for the camera and she ran for a helmet.

Our other Fifty Dangerous Things are here.

The Big Red ball in action

I forgot I had this movie when I posted the photos.  Sidney’s idea of fun was to roll down the hill inside,  Wyatt preferred climbing to the top from the inside, then letting it roll so it threw him off.

Breaking the Cookbook

Basically putting your cookbook away and just making a recipe to see how it turns out.  The goal in the book is to make simple changes to a recipe that you’ve made before, but we went overboard with recipes for muffins and cookies.  They aren’t at all similar to the real recipes we use. There’s a movie in the full post that may not show up in your RSS reader in which Wyatt reveals his secret ingredient.

Breaking the Cookbook

First we talked about how simple some recipes can be.  I told Wyatt and Sid what kind of stuff  I put in some of the bread recipes I made, then gave them each a bowl.   They started calling out ingredients I should bring them, I’ll list it all below.  Not that you’ll want to cook anything they made.

Sidney decided to make cookies, Wyatt loves muffins and decided that’s what he was going to shoot for.

We talked about why cooks try their food as it’s cooking so they’ll know what needs to be changed.  Wyatt was game, Sidney said no way.  She realized early on that her food probably wasn’t going to taste very good (right around the time she was adding basil to her chocolate peanut butter cookies).

Breaking the Cookbook

About five minutes into baking time we had a pretty good idea of how things were going to turn out, it smelled awful.   It didn’t help that Sidney’s cookies went from baking to burning in about 30 seconds, we didn’t catch them in time.

I was the guinea pig, neither of them were willing to try after watching me eat a sample.  Wyatt ate one of my blueberry muffins instead, Sidney said she lost her appetite and had to wait until we got the smell out of Read the rest of this entry »
